Gingerbread Play Dough in a Mason Jar

Nothing says "the holidays are here" quite like the smell of gingerbread filling the house, even if this batch isn't for eating. This playdough is a fun, low-mess way to keep little hands busy while the house smells like a bakery.

Keep it fresh for the next play session: A reCAP FLIP Lid seals tight so this dough stays soft for weeks, not days. Shop the FLIP Lid →

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg*
  • 1 tsp. ground cloves*
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • *To save money, you can substitute the cloves and nutmeg for allspice! Since making playdough is not an exact science, ingredients can be tweaked based on what you have on hand and your spice preferences. Pumpkin pie spice makes a great substitute

Equipment:

  • Mason jar
  • Rolling pin
  • FLIP Lid
  • Cookie Cutter

Directions:

  1. Whisk the dry ingredients together in a medium saucepan, then stir in the water and oil until a thick batter forms. Cook over low-medium heat until it becomes a dough (about 3 minutes). It'll turn a rich brown and smell just like gingerbread cookies (though it's not edible, so keep it away from little tasters).
  2. Turn the dough out onto parchment paper and knead until smooth. Makes about 2 cups.
  3. Store it in a regular mouth Mason jar sealed with a reCAP FLIP lid. This keeps the dough soft and pliable between play sessions instead of drying out in the fridge.
  4. When you're ready to play, break out the cookie cutters, googly eyes, and any decorations you like.
