Four Coffee Storage Tips and Tricks
Whether you buy freshly ground coffee from your favorite cafe or grab whatever's on sale, coffee makes the world go 'round. Mason jars capped with reCAP lids make the perfect coffee storage solution, with easy scooping and measuring, and a great way to bring café freshness home without the daily coffee shop bill.
1. Avoid light. The National Coffee Association notes that standard retail packaging isn't ideal for long-term storage. Amber-glass Mason jars are a better bet; their UV-blocking properties preserve freshness far better than clear glass.
2. Buy the right amount. Coffee starts losing freshness right after roasting, so the National Coffee Association recommends buying only a one-to-two-week supply at a time. Using the "golden ratio" of 1 to 2 tbsp of grounds per 6 oz of water, a one-cup-a-day habit at 2 tbsp works out to about 28 tablespoons (a 14-oz bag) for two weeks.
3. Keep the air out. An airtight seal matters most for pre-ground beans. A reCAP FLIP Lid fits any regular-mouth Mason jar and keeps contents tightly sealed: key to maintaining freshness, especially in the fridge or freezer.
4. Maintain storage temperature. Coffee is hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture, odors, and flavors from the air. Keep any coffee you won't use soon in the freezer or fridge for up to a month, then move it to the counter or a cool cabinet once you're ready to use it.
Bonus tip: experiment. Want a barista-quality drink without the price tag? Try making your own creamers and simple syrups; a reCAP Mason Jar Pour Spout makes pouring your DIY creations mess-free.
