How to Sanitize Old Jars Before Reusing Them
Share
Reusing jars is one of the simplest ways to reduce waste—but cleaning them properly matters, especially if you’re using them for food, beverages, soap, or DIY refills.
Whether you’re repurposing jars you already own or giving new life to old favorites, here’s a safe, effective, at-home method for sanitizing jars, lids, pumps, and misters.
Why sanitizing matters (not just rinsing)
Soap and water remove visible residue, but sanitizing reduces lingering bacteria, odors, and buildup—especially important for:
-Food storage
-Fermentation
-Homemade cleaners or personal care products
-Refillable soap pumps and misters
Clean jars last longer, work better, and keep what’s inside fresher.
Step 1: Wash everything thoroughly
Containers & lids
Wash jars and lids with soap and warm water, scrubbing any residue or labels away.
Pumps & misters
-Squirt about 8 oz of soapy water through the pump or mister
-Follow with 8 oz of clean water to fully rinse the mechanism
This step removes surface grime and prepares everything for proper sanitizing.
Step 2: Boil to sanitize
-Fill a large pot with filtered water until jars and components are fully submerged
-Bring the water to a rolling boil
-Boil for 5 minutes
Turn off the heat and allow the water to cool completely before removing items. This prevents cracking and protects seals.
*Note: Only boil glass, metal, and components that can withstand high temperatures. For plastic components, see Step 4 👇.
Step 3: Air dry completely
Remove jars, lids, pumps, and misters and place them on a clean towel or drying rack.
-Let everything air dry fully
-Avoid wiping interiors with cloths or paper towels, which can reintroduce lint or bacteria
Drying matters just as much as cleaning.
Step 4: Extra sanitizing for pumps & misters
For pump tops and misters, an extra step helps sanitize internal parts:
-Pump rubbing alcohol or vodka through the mechanism 10+ times
-Set aside and allow to air dry
Step 5: Store clean until ready to use
Once fully dry:
-Store jars and components in a clean cabinet or
-Keep them in a sealed container until you’re ready to refill
This keeps them clean and ready—no rewashing required.
A few helpful tips
-Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent glass stress
-Replace worn or cracked lids and seals
-Label jars after sanitizing so you know they’re ready to use
Clean jars = safer reuse + longer life
You don’t need special tools or harsh chemicals—just a little time and the right steps.
