How to Make Hummingbird Food

Project Time: 10 minutes

There’s something special about spotting the first hummingbird of the season.

Instead of buying pre-made nectar filled with dyes and additives, you can make your own hummingbird food in just 10 minutes — using two simple ingredients.

It’s safe.
It’s affordable.
And it supports backyard wildlife naturally.

Simple Hummingbird Food Recipe

Ingredients

-1 cup white refined sugar

-4 cups water

That’s it.

No red dye.
No honey.
No additives.

Directions

1. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil.

2. Stir in 1 cup white refined sugar until completely dissolved.

3. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool fully.

4. Fill your hummingbird feeder.

5. Store any extra nectar in a Mason jar in the refrigerator.

6. Hang the feeder where hummingbirds can easily access it.

Important Safety Tips

-Use only white refined sugar.
Honey can promote dangerous fungal growth.

-Do not use organic, raw, or natural sugars — their iron levels can be harmful to hummingbirds.

-Never add red dye.

-In hot weather, empty and clean your feeder twice per week to prevent spoilage.

Keeping the nectar fresh protects the birds and keeps them coming back.

Store It Smarter

Extra nectar stores beautifully in a Mason jar in the refrigerator. A reCAP® POUR lid makes it easy to refill feeders without spills.

Simple ingredients.
Clean storage.
Better for wildlife.

Feeding hummingbirds is a small act that makes a big impact in your backyard. As the weather warms up, now is the perfect time to prepare for their return.

One Mason jar. Endless uses.
