Green Goddess Dressing

Everyone has their version of this savory green classic. Bright, herby, and just a little tangy, Green Goddess Dressing has been adding zip to salads for over a century and like most great recipes, it comes with a story.

A dressing with history: It traces back to the Palace Hotel in 1923, created as a tribute to the play The Green Goddess. Lead actor George Arliss was staying at the hotel while performing in San Francisco, and Chef Philip Roemer crafted a creamy herb dressing in his honor: mayonnaise, sour cream, parsley, chives, anchovies, lemon juice, and vinegar. It was hugely popular from the 1920s through the 1980s before fading from menus; today's versions lean lighter, with more fresh herbs and less cream.

Our fresh take: We swap the heavy cream base for creamy avocado and Greek yogurt, layering in fresh herbs and a little jalapeño for subtle heat. It's creamy without being heavy, fresh and herb-forward, bright from lime, and perfect for salads, veggies, sandwiches, and chicken salad. And yes, it stores beautifully in a mason jar.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives
  • 1 lime (juiced)
  • 1/2 green jalapeño (seeds removed or kept for heat, minced)
  • 1 medium ripe avocado (cubed)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 5.3 oz Greek-style yogurt
  • 1/3 cup olive oil–based mayonnaise
  • 1 to 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil (optional, to thin)

How to make it:

  1. Prep and chop all ingredients for a smoother blend.
  2. Blend the avocado, cilantro, chives, lime juice, jalapeño, garlic, salt, pepper, and honey until smooth.
  3. Transfer to a bowl, add the mayonnaise and yogurt, and whisk to combine.
  4. Thin with olive oil if desired. That's it!

How to use it: drizzle over hearty green salads, sliced cucumber, roasted vegetables, grilled chicken, or sandwiches, or fold it into our Green Goddess Chicken Salad for an easy, protein-packed lunch.

Store it smarter: Pour into a Mason jar and seal with the reCAP POUR lid for mess-free storage and pouring: BPA-free, leak-proof, dishwasher safe, and made in the USA. One jar, endless uses.
