Grilled Buttermilk Chicken Marinade in a Mason Jar

Grilled Buttermilk Chicken Marinade in a Mason Jar

Prep Time: 40 minutes; Makes: 6 servings

There’s a reason buttermilk marinades have stood the test of time.

They tenderize.
They infuse flavor.
They keep chicken juicy, not dry and disappointing.

A soak in herb-laced buttermilk gives this grilled chicken a subtle tang while locking in moisture. It’s simple, reliable, and perfect for summer grilling.

And when you make it in a Mason jar? Even better.

Why Marinate in a Mason Jar?

Messy marinades don’t belong in flimsy plastic bags.

Using a Mason jar with a reCAP® Wide Mouth POUR lid makes the entire process cleaner, more practical, and far less wasteful.

Here’s why we love this hack:

1. It Travels Better to BBQs

Heading to a cookout? Screw on the lid and go. No leaks, no spills in the cooler.

2. Less Mess, Less Plastic

Ziplock bags tear. Marinade drips. Tongs slip.
A jar eliminates the struggle and reduces single-use plastic.

3. Everyone Can Customize

Want red pepper flakes? Extra cilantro? More garlic?
Prepare individual pint jars so everyone can season their own.

4. The Perfect Fit

A wide mouth pint jar fits a single chicken breast beautifully.
Cooking for a family? Use a pint-and-a-half or quart jar.

5. It Stays Sealed and Safe

The reCAP® lid keeps everything tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Just remember to wash the gasket thoroughly after use.

Simple system. Smarter storage.

Grilled Buttermilk Chicken Marinade

Ingredients

-2 cups buttermilk

-7 garlic cloves

-½ cup rosemary or thyme

-Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper (to taste)

-Safflower oil for brushing

-6 wide mouth pint jars (or 1 wide mouth quart jar)

-6 reCAP® Wide Mouth POUR Caps (one per jar)

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine buttermilk, garlic, herbs, salt, and pepper.

2. Place chicken breasts into Mason jars and pour in the marinade until covered.

3. Seal with reCAP® POUR lids.

4. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

5. Remove chicken from the refrigerator 30 minutes before grilling.

Grilling Tip: Create Two Heat Zones

For best results, set up your grill with:

-High, direct heat (over the coals)

-Low, indirect heat (away from the coals)

Start the chicken over direct heat to develop color, then move to indirect heat to finish cooking gently without drying out.

Brush lightly with safflower oil before grilling for a golden finish.

A Smarter Way to Marinate

This method isn’t just about flavor.
It’s about intention.

Reusable jars.
Less waste.
Better organization in the fridge.
Easier transport.

Because sustainable living shows up in everyday habits, even in how we marinate chicken.

One Mason jar. Endless uses.
